Many Thanks to FSD for a fine, fun, fast, free flyer!!!

Also includes "External-Touchdown-Sound" effect, with thanks to:

Adnane BOURJA
Adnanebourja@caramail.com
Casablanca, Morocco.

These XML gauges were improved due to excellent suggestions made
by Rob Barendregt, and I thank him very much for his help!

And many thanks to another Rob, for expert beta testing!

NOTES:

1. This aircraft, like the real one, lasts a long time, and
    works perfectly well in FS9.

2. Fly the T38 in FS9 at least once before installing the effects,
    to set up the aircraft.cfg with the new sections...

3. In my case, I just cut & pasted the T38 aircraft folder (and the gauges
    it used) from FS2002 to FS2004.

4. In FS2004 settings, "Render to texture" must be turned "off".

5. The "heat" shimmer at startup can eat-up frame rates, so it is
    limited to 3, 6, or 9 minutes, or none at all, your choice...

6. Choice of two versions of afterburner flame: regular, or "no sparks"

7. Choice of two versions of burner smoke trail: regular, or "dark"

8. With my vid card at least, the flame effects are deformed while
    the "red-lettered" info (shift+z) is displayed....

9. The "whooom" sound is available separately, look for "WHOOM_FX.zip"

10. Also look for "TJet_FS9.zip" for update info on my earlier "TJET_T38.zip"
    twin/single small jet sounds.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> CAVEAT AVIATOR: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
To have these new effects you must give up the FSD "announciator" gauge, which
was used to control the wing vortex in the original design, via [smokesystem].
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

FEATURES:

* XML-controlled afterburner flames using your assigned key or joystick button.
* XML-controlled flaptip vortex at deployment.
* XML-controlled wingtip vortex using "g-force" and "roll-rate".
* XML-controlled afterburner smoke trail and optional "whoom" sound.
* XML-controlled afterburner indicator lamps in each panel.
* Custom "touchdown" tiremark/smoke with optional external "chirp" sound.
* Custom jet engine startup effect with optional "heat" shimmer.
* Custom high-altitude contrail (very long-lasting, ala AI_Contrail).

INSTALLATION:

Unzip to a temporary folder, then:

1. Open the "New_sounds" folder:

   (Step "1." can be skipped if you don't want the "chirp" sounds...)

   Put the "wav" files into the "Flight Simulator 9\sound" folder.
   (You may already have the same files from my other effects, OK to over-write, or not)

   (Get the "whooom" sounds separately from "WHOOM_FX.zip")

2. Open the "New_XML_gauges" folder:

   Put the entire FOLDER "T38COF_FX" into the "Flight Simulator 9\gauges" folder as a "sub-folder"....
   (Won't work if the XML gauges are mixed in with all the others.)

3. Open the "New_effects" folder:

   Put all the new effect files into the "Flight Simulator 9\effects" folder...
   (Check "Yes" to over-writing; as some of my earlier T38 effect files are revised for FS9)

4. Open the "New_texture" folder:

   Put the bitmap file into the "Flight Simulator 9\effects\texture" folder.
   (You may already have this same file from my effects for Kirk's F-16, OK to over-write, or not)

5. Open the "Edited_FSD_T38_panel-cfg" folder:

   You will find the original FSD T38 "panel.cfg" with the edits completed to enable the new effects.
   This seemed to be the easiest way to get a complicated editing job done for all users...

   Make a back-up copy of your original "panel.cfg", or rename it "panel_ORIG.cfg",
   then put the edited one in the T38 "panel" folder.

6. The aircraft.cfg file is likely different for each user, so please make your own edits:

   Open a copy of the T38 "aircraft.cfg" file and edit the four sections below
   with "Notepad" cut-and-paste tools:

INSTALL COMPLETE....

OPERATION:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The FSD throttle gauge/panel must be "visible" to user at least once before the
XML afterburner control will work properly. (same as before, in 2002 version)

Before you do anything else, look at (open) the 2D panel first, then start-up, etc
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The afterburner ignites only at full throttle, using the keyboard or a joystick
button, and goes out as throttle is pulled back. With optional "whoom" sound at
each ignition. The "whooom" sound is available separately, look for "WHOOM_FX.zip"

The jet "smoke" trail appears only while the afterburners are "lit", at any altitude.

Don't stand too close or behind the aircraft with burners "lit", you will be blinded w/smoke:)

The flaptip vortex appears at flap deployment, above IAS 125 kts.

The wingtip vortex appears at 1.5 or 1.75 "G" and/or at quick roll-rate. Also w/flaps (optional).

The AB indicator sits in "front" of the lower half of the default FSD "nozzle" gauge;
the FSD "nozzle" gauge itself is not altered. A blue lamp for each burner will turn
orange when the burner is "lit". Also works with night lighting.

Small tiremark/smoke with optional external "chirp" sound appears at touchdown.

The startup smoke and "heat" begins at engine combustion (default activation);
and after the smoke puffs quickly go away, the "heat" will last for a specific
duration denoted in "minutes" by the number in the effect filename.(3, 6, or 9min.)

The contrail appears when the outside ambient air temp is cold enough. (default activation)

A "pilot report" on the T-38: http://www.warbirdalley.com/t38pr.htm

JET SOUND AVAILABLE:

Using the "pilot report" referenced above, I have also compiled for
the FSD T-38 a new twin jet sound using edited default FS2002/CFS3
waves with edited .cfg parameters. The quiet "electro-mechanical"
sound inside the cockpit is matched to engine RPM exactly to give
audio feedback of throttle settings, especially handy to me on final
approach to landing. The new "wind" noise in the cockpit increases in
pitch and volume in direct relation to airspeed, giving a sense of
increasing velocity. The max volume of the wind noise is adjustable
within the sound.cfg file. External sounds are "military" and loud.

Will also work with Lear etc, or other military jets, single or multi
and has reverse thrust sound included.

Look for: "TJET_T38.zip" in the library

Also look for "TJET_FS9.zip" for update info.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

BONUS SPEED INCREASE INFO:

I have made a "souped-up" version of my copy of the FSD T-38, inspired by Chris Klein's
hot paint jobs. After a few changes to the aircraft.cfg, we can get to Mach 1.5 (900 kts
ground speed, 750 kias) above 12000 to 15000 ft, enough to catch any AI aircraft! The
afterburner is used for quick acceleration, then is not needed at top cruise speed, saving
some fuel. See the "Graph.jpg" in the root folder....

To gain the extra speed:

Look in the T38 "aircraft.cfg" for the following sections, making the edits as shown:

[fltsim.XX]
editable=1 //0 just to be sure

[airplane_geometry]
spoiler_limit=17.0 //45.0 reduced effectivness of spoiler(optional, for use on final)

[pitot_static]
vertical_speed_time_constant=90

[jet_engine]
thrust_scalar=1.45 //1.00 adds power(parking brake needed at idle)
                        // brakes won't hold at MIL power

[TurbineEngineData]
static_thrust= 2780     //2680  adds just a little

[Reference Speeds]
cruise_speed=550.0
max_indicated_speed=1000.000000
max_mach=2.300000

"HEAT" NOTES:

The "heat" effect uses many hundreds of sprites and can affect frame rates on
slower systems like mine (733mhz), so I use the "heat" effect mostly on the ground,
taxiing, run-up, and take-off, where it can best be seen in "spot" view. In flight
the aircraft moves so fast that all those sprites can't keep up, and they trail
behind a good bit. So by putting a time limit on the "heat", it just goes away
quietly after take-off. You can remove the time limit and thus have "heat" all
you want, but it won't go away after engine shutdown (and you have to select a new
flight to get rid of it). The effect file can be edited with Notepad to adjust
the time limit; only 4 lines have to be changed (see the file). Three ready-made
time limits are included, 3, 6, and 9 minutes.
