27 Mar 2008: Awarded the Virtual Air Force Commendation Medal by Glenn 'GasMan' Blanco
27 Mar 2008: Don "Speed" vCOL Mathisen is an outstanding Wing Commander of the 60 AMW. He has been in Command since 2 APR 07. In that time, the 60AW has grown to it's largest number of pilots since it's inception into the vUSAF. It is manned with highly skilled and experienced C-5 pilots, and a highly dedicated squadron of KC-10 tankers. Durning his tenure as Wing Commander, the 60AW has almost doubled monthly flight hours. His Wing has sucessfully participated in multiple Operations and excercises. All of which terminated with accolades from the Wings and operations that the 60AW had supported. Col. Mathisen has instituted a Wing policy of rotational "on-call" Tanker support. The vANG conducts excercises on Sunday evenings, that require tanking durning the excercise. This has proved to a be highly sucessful policy. It is because of vCOL Mathisen's leadership skills and dedication as an instructor pilot that this Wing has grown and stayed together as a team. He reflects credit upon himself, and the vUSAF. For this, vCOL Mathisen is well deserving to receive the Virtual Air Force Commendation medal.

Col Mathison flew a total of 15 sorties, delivering 280 relief workers and 910,000 pounds of humanitarian supplies and equipment to the areas affected by Hurricane Ike. 22 Jul 2009: Don was the 60th AMW commander from April 2007 - July 2009. During that time, his wing under his leadership participated in numerous operations, Deep Freeze 2007/2008, Red Flag Alaska 2007/2008, Coronet Oak 2008 and numerous hurricane operations throughout the 2007 and 2008 hurricane seasons. During Don's tenure as Wing Commander, he received 1 Aerial Achievement medal, 1 VUSAF Commendation medal, and was instrumental in the 60th AMW receiving the Outstanding Unit citation for flights done during a period from Dec 2007 - Feb 2008. His 'can do' attitude allowed his pilots to know that they could rely on their commander and his training of his pilots under him showed that he cared for them in making sure that they had all the resources available to allow his pilots to grow. Don's attention to detail made sure that his pilots were aware of operations in a timely fashion and attributed to his wings 100% completion rate on time during operations. He also made sure that his pilots stayed current in the C-5 Galaxy aircraft, by following up with them, making they met the requirements and setting up training to allows his pilots to stay mission ready. His service to the AMC and the 60th AMW is in great standing and reflects positively upon himself, the VUSAF, and it's members. And for these actions he has been awarded the vUSAF DSM.
